An Irish Boy Celebrates St Patrick's Day with a Green Hat

St Patrick’s Day is just around the corner so get ready to don your green outfits, drink some Guiness and come out from behind those Shamrocks to celebrate with the Irish!

Each year St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17 which is the Patron Saint of Ireland, St Patrick’s religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over a thousand years.

In modern-day Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day has traditionally been a religious occasion. In fact, up until the 1970s, Irish laws mandated that pubs be closed on March 17. The main attraction was a massive eight metre sky lantern, which was assembled specially for the event, with the words, “Sky Lanterns lighten both sides of the Straits” written across it. Once the lantern was released it drew cheers from the crowds.

Lantern-makers and performers from the  mainland province of Sichuan were invited to the celebrations. Wu Jiakui, one of the Sichuan lantern-makers, said he felt honoured to take part in the celebrations.

“What impressed me most is how well the traditional culture of the Chinese nation has been preserved here in Taiwan, in sky lantern making especially.”
