Montreal Chinese Lantern Festival

September 2nd, 2009

We’ve just heard about a great event that takes place in the Chinese Botanical Gardens in Montreal each fall.  From 11th of September to November 1st the park is transformed into something quite magical…

.

Each year the botanical garden is lit up by a fantastic display of Chinese Lanterns.  The display lasts for the best part of a month and it includes all types of Chinese Lanterns, not just the type that we offer on our website.  Large lanterns are arranged and tied to take the shape of classic Chinese themes, such as the Azure Dragon and the Black Tortoise.

Each year there is a new theme, and this is represented by the silk lanterns that line the paths and walkways through the park.  The theme for this years event has taken it’s inspiration from classic Chinese Astronomy.  Early astronomers from China were some of the first to make significant discoveries about the stars in our solar system so it’s only fitting to celebrate this by letting of some lanterns to fly off high into the night sky!

We recommend you check out this website if you want more information about it, there are also plans for live music to be played on certain nights.  According to that site there will be over 700 different lanterns, of all shapes and sizes so it’s bound to be a completely spectacular event.

Capture Chinese Lanterns with Ease

August 10th, 2009

Chinese Lanterns have been a real hit at weddings, barbeques and festivals this year and our staff haven’t held back in capturing these Chinese Lanterns on Film in new and exciting ways.

Chinese Lanterns NFL

Well to be frank with you they aren’t actually using film. With the huge rise in digital technology we tend to prefer the convenience of a digital camera with includes many benefits such as the ability to edit your shots on the go, reviewing your shots and evening making video clips with stereo sound and on some models HD quality footage, watch out Speilberg!
I made a recent camera purchase and it was a complicated business, with many different brands, thousands of models and quite possibly millions of features it is easy to get bamboozled by your local camera sales guy. I therefore feel it’s my duty to arm you with what I’ve learned and help you select the camera YOU want. I broke the camera into 3 main types all aimed at the consumer or high-end consumer.

1. Rugged
Extreme sportsperson? Predictably Clumsy or Pro surfer? A rugged camera could be the perfect partner to capture your high impact lifestyle. The Olympus MJU was top of the pops in this category due to its sheer strength, how many cameras’ can boast being 100kg crushproof and waterproof to 10m. A friend of mine has this model and never fails to amaze people at his local pub by putting the 10 sec timer on and then dunking it into his beer with the flash on as people gasp thinking he’s just ruined his camera.

2.    SuperZoom
Never get the best seat in house when watching the NFL? With this camera you don’t need to, a superzoom can get in on the action and capturing some amazing sporting shots.  The Canon SX10is really stood out for me with a 20x zoom, articulating LCD and high quality shots as well as some fairly polished video capturing abilities. It also has a wide angle lense so you can get team photo’s or family shots without cropping out Uncle Arthur accidentally.
3.    Compact
The name says it all really; the aim of the game is to cram some decent spec’s into a small camera that can fit comfortably into your top pocket or handbag ready for life’s spontaneous moments.. The Canon SD780 filled all these needs and more with more megapixels than you can shake a stick at and High Def. Video it just go to show how quickly this technology is moving. 5 years ago you’d need a suitcase to lug this many features about!
I’ve tried to keep it straightforward and simple with my reviews, hopefully it’s helped you on your journey to digital freedom. If you would like to ask me any question don’t hesitate to reply to this post. Or if you need more detailed info try my favourite site dPreview.com.

Chinese Lanterns or UFOs?

July 24th, 2009

Sky Lantern taking offUFO stories always make a splash in the news, everyone loves a story speculating about extra terrestrials coming to visit the Earth.  Sadly for the conspiracy theorists there might be a slightly more mundane explanation to sightings,  Chinese lanterns are often the reason for reports.

The latest sighting involving Chinese lanterns as one of the explanations took place in Harborough, England.  A glowing object was filmed by a man doing some light exercise in the park, the footage was then later given to a local newspaper that ran the story on their website.

The video is certainly very interesting to watch, and the glowing object is definitely some way up in the sky.  There have been a few interesting ideas about what it is, with one likely theory being that it is the International Space Station, as it was apparently orbiting in the same area as the sighting.  On occasions the space station can be seen when the Sun reflects of it, giving it a very similar look to the object in the video.

However here we think there is probably a much more likely explanation, it wouldn’t be surprising at all if it just turned out to be one of our sky lanterns, they are the reason for numerous mistaken sightings and if you compare the video to the pictures on our website you can see the similarities.

If you have your own reported sightings of UFOs that need an explanation, of if you just want to find out some more about our lanterns feel free to send us an email at sales@wishlantern.com.

Chinese Lanterns & The Long Solar Eclipse

July 22nd, 2009

sky lantern eclipseThe longest solar eclipse of the century took place today over large parts of Asia and China.  The eclipse, at it’s fullest point, lasted six minutes and 39 seconds.  Now this got us thinking about our chinese lanterns

From the reports in the media it sounded as though this eclipse was a pretty spectacular event, with literally millions of people gathering to watch the Sun be blocked by the Moon.   Throughout Asia it was possible to see, at the very least, a partial eclipse.

Unfortunately the one area that was dubbed beforehand as the best place to see the event suffered from overcast weather, so only half of the eclipse was visible from the ground.  This led to a few disappointed onlookers who had specifically traveled to  the village of Taregna for the unique event.

One group of enthusiasts who were certainly not disappointed had gone to the lengths of booking a specially chartered flight to get the best possible view.   One BBC reporter was on the flight and described it as ‘an emotional and breathtaking experience’.  A number of religious beliefs surround a solar eclipse, including varying ideas about it bringing good or bad luck.  Thousands of people gathered at the banks of the Ganges to wet themselves in the Holy water during the eclipse, as it is meant to be auspicious.

We hope here at wishlantern.com that someone had the mind to release some sky lanterns during the eclipse,  it would certainly be an amazing sight seeing them let off just before the sun was completely covered, and then seeing the illuminate the dark sky.

Chinese Lanterns in the Media

July 10th, 2009

chinese_lantern_ufoOver the past couple of weeks Chinese Lanterns have been in a number of news stories in the media.  One of the incidents that got the most media attention took place along the coast of England, in Dover.  There have apparently been a few times when people walking along the coast have seen a chinese lantern glowing in the sky and mistaken it for a distress signal from a boat!

The news story was even picked up by some of the national newspapers, including the Telegraph, which also reported that the emergency services get the occasional call mistaking the lanterns for UFO’s!

Sightings of our sky lanterns have led to many reports of UFO’s being seen.  However we would like to reassure the public that if you do see a glowing light floating in the sky it is much more likely to be a one of our lanterns and not an alien invasion!

If you have any questions that need answering please feel free to leave a post in our comments section of this blog article.
