Yee Peng is one of these festivals and its name refers to the 12th lunar full moon in the Buddhist calendar. Celebrations take place in Chiang Mai and usually occur in November on the western Calendar. Other parts of Thailand also refer to this festival as Loy Kratong.

A religious event Yee Peng is celebrated by the local people who take part in traditional activities. My personal highlight of this festival is the release into the sky of ‘Khom Loy’ or ‘Thai Lanterns’ as westerners tend to call them. Watching hundreds upon hundreds of these lanterns quietly cascading into the sky is breath taking and definitely a must see if your lucky enough to time your travels through Thailand with this momentous occasion.

It is understood that by releasing these Thai lanterns you are releasing misfortune from your life which I’m sure you’ll agree is nothing to be sniffed at and helps to explain this events popularity. The light from the lantern is also said to represent the guiding light in your life steering you on the right future path.

These Lanterns are made from Bamboo and rice paper and float skyward for approximately 15 mins until the attached full cell dies out and they glide gently back to earth, albeit in a new location. The recent upsurge in popularity has even resulted in the Royal Thai Air Force suspending flights during the pinnacle of the event and warnings to commercial air traffic at the airport to exercise extreme caution as the Thai lanterns could pose a threat to the jet turbine.

Usually we monitor the news on stories to do with Wish Lanterns and sometimes we get the odd cow related story through as some UK farmers have been worried about the effects of a used Wish Lantern on their cattle herds.  Some cattle farmers claim Wish Lanterns are dangerous for their cows as they may ingest the used Wish Lantern and choke. However, it seems the shoe is on the other foot now.

A BBC news story that’s recently come out of the UK titled, “Walkers warned over cow dangers” explains how dangerous cows can be when protecting their calves.

The story states that walkers should be very careful when walking through countryside with cows, especially if they have dogs with them, as cows can stampede and kill while trying to protect their calves.

The following people have died as a result of cow attacks:

Farmer Harold Lee, 75, from Somerset died in hospital earlier this month after being trampled after his herd were apparently startled by a fire engine siren. A walker, Anita Hinchey, 63, was trampled to death in July by cows when she tried to rescue her dog which ran into the herd near Cardiff. In June, 49-year-old vet Liz Crowsley was trampled to death by a herd of cattle while walking the Pennine Way with her two dogs.

Before the latest incidents, Health and Safety Executive figures showed that 18 people had been killed and 481 injured by cows in the previous eight years.

The nursing team thought it would be beneficial to have some Wish Lanterns (also known as Memorial Lanterns) to give to families they work with the opportunity to remember their children on their birthdays in a memorable way. The second “Golden Week” of the year is fast-approaching in Hong Kong, a time to celebrate the National Day in China (Oct 1st), and during which natives and tourists flock away from the mainland in search of celebration, entertainment, and togetherness. As the nights draw in over Hong Kong, soft lights come on, sky lanterns are released and wishes are made by locals as the lanterns gently rise, become smaller and smaller, and slowly disappear into the night.
We’ve heard talk of some wish lantern customers actually travelling to the festival this year to partake in some of the celebrations and visit the attractions which spring up, such as the numerous street festivals, the selling of mooncakes, and children carrying their own hand made paper lanterns after dark. Hopefully they’ll be carefully packing some lanterns with them so they too can really become part of the celebrations! And once they set the lanterns off, they can rest assured that they will burn away whilst still in the sky, and any material left which may come back down to earth is completely biodegradable.
It should be a great holiday this year, particularly following the high of last year’s Beijing Olympics – spirits are still high in China, and the locals are keen to celebrate and come together at this special time of year.

Remember, remember the fifth of November. The gunpowder treason and plot. I see no reason, why the gunpowder treason, Should ever be forgot.

This rhyme is one of the many contemporary verses written in condemnation of Guy Fawkes whom was notorious for his involvement in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. The plot was masterminded by Robert Catesby and an attempt by a group of religious conspirators to kill King James using large amounts of gunpowder. Guy was probably placed in charge of executing the plot because of his military explosives experience. Unfortunately for Guy the plot was uncovered by a tip-off and he was caught during his attempt.
These days Guy Fawkes attempt has been glamorised by popular culture and families around the world light skyrockets, and other fireworks to commemorate this day and although for most it is a fun filled evening the unpredictable nature of gunpowder and fireworks leaves many burnt and the family pet scampering for a safe spot to hide.

Some people come up with some really great original ideas of how to make the day a bit more exciting and special.  Other ways to keep the kids entertained whilst they’ve got all that sugar in their systems is games like bobbing for apples or getting them to help make designs for the pumpkin carvings.

This afternoon Wish Lantern central was fortunate to receive an email from a customer with some great photos of an event that took place in Oil City, PA. The Venango Area Chamber of Commerce were kind enough to email back some photos of an event that took place recently called “An Evening on the Summit”.

Each year the botanical garden is lit up by a fantastic display of Chinese Lanterns.  The display lasts for the best part of a month and it includes all types of Chinese Lanterns, not just the type that we offer on our website.  Large lanterns are arranged and tied to take the shape of classic Chinese themes, such as the Azure Dragon and the Black Tortoise.

Each year there is a new theme, and this is represented by the silk lanterns that line the paths and walkways through the park.  The theme for this years event has taken it’s inspiration from classic Chinese Astronomy.  Early astronomers from China were some of the first to make significant discoveries about the stars in our solar system so it’s only fitting to celebrate this by letting of some lanterns to fly off high into the night sky!

We recommend you check out this website if you want more information about it, there are also plans for live music to be played on certain nights.  According to that site there will be over 700 different lanterns, of all shapes and sizes so it’s bound to be a completely spectacular event.
