An Irish Boy Celebrates St Patrick's Day with a Green Hat

St Patrick’s Day is just around the corner so get ready to don your green outfits, drink some Guiness and come out from behind those Shamrocks to celebrate with the Irish!

Each year St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17 which is the Patron Saint of Ireland, St Patrick’s religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over a thousand years.

In modern-day Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day has traditionally been a religious occasion. In fact, up until the 1970s, Irish laws mandated that pubs be closed on March 17. Beginning in 1995, however, the Irish government began a national campaign to use St. Patrick’s Day as an opportunity to drive tourism and showcase Ireland to the rest of the world. Last year, close to one million people took part in Ireland ‘s St. Patrick’s Festival in Dublin, a multi-day celebration featuring parades, concerts, outdoor theater productions, and fireworks shows.

If you are travelling to Ireland for St Patrick’s Day you should take along some green Wish Lanterns (also known as sky lanterns) to release during the fireworks show. You could even use them at a St Patrick’s Day party you were having at home, green ones would look glorious up in the blue sky.

The people of Chicago really get amongst the party, they dye the Chicago River green each St Patrick’s Day to celebrate – they use forty pounds of green dye which is enough to colour the entire river green for a few hours. It truly is a sight to behold.
